Dozens of homes will be built in the Vale if council planners approve new plans.

An application outlining the plans for homes at the former Bonhill Primary site was lodged last week.

Cube Housing have submitted an application to build 44 homes on the site to West Dunbartonshire Council, with the documents made public on Wednesday.

The current site is "undeveloped" and "covered in unmaintained grass", according to a site survey submitted with the application.

The former primary school closed in 2014, and the area has been designated as a brownfield site.

West Dunbartonshire Council's Local Development Plan is currently being reviewed, but there are several locations in Dumbarton and the Vale which have been earmarked for housing, including the Allied Distillers site in Dumbarton, and 311 Main Street, Bonhill.

A new school was built to the north of the proposed site.

A history of the site is also included with the application, outlining the residential developments in the surrounding areas since the 1970s.

Developers Cube have already build scores of homes in West Dunbartonshire, and hope to add to their list.

The homes will be developed in Main Street, Bonhill if approved, and there will be a mix of one and two bedroom flats built on the site.

Some of the units - at this stage thought to be four - will be wheelchair accessible.

Cube Director David Mackenzie told the Reporter: “If approved, our plans will see 44 much-needed one and two bedroom homes built in Bonhill, four of which will be suitable for wheelchair users.

“The plans are part of our strategic partnership with West Dunbartonshire Council which has already seen 87 homes completed.”

Although the River Leven is 80m to the west of the site, the council has informed developers they have no record of any flooding on the site.

In West Dunbartonshire, more than 4000 homes were built from 1996 to 2009, with 87 per cent being built on brownfield sites.
