A 62-year-old man has been jailed for two years for dealing drugs worth a potential value on the street of more than £70,000.

Hunched over a walker, David Allan was led slowly out the back of court 1 of Dumbarton Sheriff Court instead of down stairs to the cells to begin his sentence.

Sheriff William Gallacher noted that Allan looked older than he was because of his "lifestyle".

Allan previously pleaded guilty to being concerned in the supply of diamorphine in Stirling Road, Milton, on March 13, 2015.

His defence solicitor, Tom Brown, told the court at sentencing last week: "He pleaded guilty immediately after the hearing in evidence.

"His position from the start was he accepted his involvement in the matter.

"It's pretty clear he has been taken advantage of. It's unfortunate that he is the person sitting in the dock rather than the person who led him to do this.

"He is an easy target.

"He would not be in a position to carry out unpaid work. Supervision, on the face of it, is not a sentence you would impose. He has understood right from the start the likely outcome is a custodial sentence. He pleaded guilty from the beginning knowing the likely outcome."

Sheriff Gallacher said he had no option but to jail Allan, particularly considering a previous conviction at the High Court under the Misuse of Drugs Act.

He said: "You were involved in the process of supplying drugs. You appear as a very old man, but you're not an old man.

"I take consideration that you were not the prime mover. This is something you engaged in deliberately. You knew what you were doing.

"This is a serious Class A drug which is a scourge in our community. The value and quantity were very significant. There was a potential retail value of up to £70,000. I cannot let that pass without a serious custodial sentence.

"There are those in prisons around Scotland that are years older than you."

Allan, of Bardowie Street, Possilpark, Glasgow, was jailed for 25 months, reduced from 30 months.
