Pupils and teachers of Bonhill Primary School wowed last week as they dressed as a huge array of much-loved literary characters to celebrate World Book Day.

The children went all out to bring their favourite books to life – with everything from Harry Potter to fairy tale princesses gracing the school gates – and took part in a host of book-themed events.

Despite the delay to the literary festivities due to this month’s unprecedented severe weather, all the children’s hard work and preparation for the day did not go to waste. And librarian Marjorie McGregor commended the efforts of the whole school in creating a wonderful day full of fun.

She said: “We had everything. Mary Poppins was quite popular, we had Harry Potter. You name it, we had it.

“The children look forward to World Book Day every year. To say there was disappointment when we had to delay it was an understatement.”

The day’s highlight was a quiz for each class based on favourite stories – all conducted by the school’s library committee, which consists of pupils from classes p3 to p7.

Each class put their knowledge to the test on a different book: p1 had The Gruffalo, p2/3 focused on The Story of Jack and the Beanstalk, p4/5 took on Roald Dahls’ The BFG, while p6/7 answered questions on Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Third Wheel.

The librarian added: “The school’s library committee put so much work into it. It was brilliant to see them do it all on their own. We just watched them go.

“They chose the books and chose 10 questions out of each book. They took the quizzes quite seriously.

“They gave a book to each class and at the end they played Disney music and had a wee dance.”

And Ms McGregor highlighted the importance of the day for the school’s calendar, with its meaning going way beyond a chance to dress up.

She said: “It’s important because of the amount of libraries closing down now. It brings together the children and you talk about the books, and they realise there are all different types of books. It broadens their horizons."
