POLICE divers are searching the River Leven following reports of a young boy jumping from the Bonhill Bridge, Dumbarton, on Thursday evening.

The bridge was closed to traffic as Police Scotland, Scottish Fire and Rescue Service and local community police began a painstaking search. A police helicopter, using heat sensors, was also deployed. It was stepped up on Friday morning when the police underwater marine unit joined the search.

The search on Thursday evening continued through to 3am and was resumed at first light.

A police spokesman told the Reporter that there had been no reports of any missing persons either last night or today.

She went on: "A female member of the public reported someone standing a the bridge railing. Historically young boys have jumped off the bridge and got out again quickly. We are acting on reports of a boy jumping from the bridge last night but to date nobody has been found.

"The search is continuing. But it doesn't appear there is anyone in the water."
