The current St Ronan’s Primary School building in Bonhill will be renamed Lennox Primary, it has been announced.

The new name will be used once the current St Ronan’s pupils move out and youngsters from Highdykes and Ladyton primaries move in to the revamped building after the summer holidays.

The change is part of a £1.6million education shake-up in the area to upgrade run-down schools.

St Ronan’s pupils will be moving into the current Ladyton building and Highdykes Primary will be demolished and the land sold to developers to cover the cost of the project.

Lennox Primary was chosen from a shortlist of four names after consultation with parents, pupils and staff.

The others in the running were: Heart of the Hill Primary; Bonnie Well Primary; and Redburn Primary.

The school uniform has also been chosen and will be grey trousers or skirt with purple as the school colour.

Parents at Highdykes were told of the shortlist being passed to the education department in a letter from the school’s acting head teacher Marie Guthrie.

A West Dunbartonshire Council spokeswoman said: “Following consultation with pupils, parents and staff at Ladyton and Highdykes, Lennox Primary has emerged as their favoured choice of name for the new school. They have also chosen purple as the new school colour.

“Pupils are now designing the new school badge.” The merger and relocation of the schools was approved by the council earlier this year following a lengthy consultation process.

The public consultation showed a majority of parents and pupils at the schools opposed the merger and relocation but staff at Highdykes and St Ronan’s – and teaching union the Educational Institute for Scotland – backed the plans.
