FOND farewells were given on social media when a Dumbarton children's club closed down after 28 years.

The 5:45 Club was saw it's organiser Christine Galloway bring things to a close just before Christmas, prompting heartfelt messages on Facebook.

Christine was presented with flowers and vouchers at a goodbye party at the AGM of Lennox Evangelical Church, Dumbarton.

Looking back on her time running the club Christine told the Reporter: "We finished on that term there because a lot of factors just meant that the club wasn't really suitable anymore.

"When we started there weren't as many school-run after school clubs and we would get around 60 kids coming along. They would just run down on their own as well but these days parents don't want children out alone like that.

"It's been a wonderful time though and I've met so many. I've had mothers bringing their kids down who used to come along when they were kid themselves!

"In one way it's quite sad that we're bringing it to an end but in another way it's not as bad. A lot of people have kept in touch and we I definitely don't have any regrets about it.

Hundreds of children have attended over 28 years enjoying games, Bible stories, songs, quizzes, snacks, and prizes.

She posted a word of thanks on her social media page, saying: “I'd like to thank all those who have helped and supported the 5:45 club down through the years.

"Too many to mention but a special thanks to Maggie, Rachael and Karen who deserve a medal for long service and commitment. Also thanks to Rebecca and Elle, two youth helpers for their encouragement and help."

Comments flooded Christine's post on Facebook with many recalling fond times at the club. Richard Patterson commented: “Many great memories from the 5.45 club, I think the last time I helped was about 23 years ago, Christine you were great, your love and enthusiasm for the kids and for God was instrumental in the success of the club, you also had a great team of helpers, and the tea afterwards was great as well. Thanks!”

This may not be the end entirely for Christine's after school work as she explained: "We're thinking about a new club as well somewhere down the line in a different place but we're going to have a few months off first and then get into it.

"Things have changed for me too, now that I'm a granny as well we just need to see how things are."
