THE new year has brought with it a new change at the top for Dumbarton and Vale of Leven 'L' division police force in the form of Chief Superintendent Ronnald Hawthorn who became the new divisional commander.

Mr Hawthorn is no stranger to the area having worked with Strathclyde police since joining the force in 1970.

And he was Chief Inspector in neighbouring Clydebank four and a half years ago.

The 45-year-old comes to Dumbarton from the Scottish Police College where he was Director of senior policing.

He is a strong believer in the importance of keeping and building on the close ties established with West Dunbartonshire Council since it became a unitary authority which he said has resulted in a better delivery of many services to the public.

The new Chief Super-intendant described the Spotlight Initiative, run jointly between police and council, as a "tremendous success" and will continue with the imitative into 1997.

He said: "The Spotlight Initiative is trying to redress the balance against the public perception of crime and reduce people's fears."
