AN investigation is under way after a man was hurt in an 'industrial incident' at Chivas Brothers' Kilmalid site in Dumbarton this morning.

Emergency services rushed to the scene after the 27-year-old became trapped under machinery at around 11.50am.

He was taken to the RAH in Paisley where he is said to be suffering from 'non-life-threatening' injuries.

A spokeswoman for Chivas Brothers told the Reporter this evening: “We can confirm that an incident took place at our Kilmalid site this morning.

"We take the safety of all people working on our sites extremely seriously and would like to thank the emergency services and Chivas Brothers personnel for their swift response.

“In the first instance our thoughts are with the individual involved.

"A full and thorough investigation into the incident is now under way.”

Inspector John Mullen, of Dumbarton police, said a report had been sent to the Health and Safety Executive as a matter of routine, which he added was cooperating fully with the investigation.

In an unusual move at a full meeting of West Dunbartonshire Council at Garshake this evening, a minute's silence was held in reaction to the incident.

The move was proposed by Cllr George Black, who had heard unconfirmed reports of a fatality at the site - which Chivas Brothers has since confirmed is not the case.

After reading reports on local media websites during the meeting, Provost Douglas McAllister informed councillors the victim of the incident had not died, to which Cllr Black responded: "I believe the council acted properly and honestly. I apologise if I have caused the council any embarrassment."

Provost McAllister added: "Our thoughts continue to go out to the individual involved. I'm sure the council will be relieved a person has not lost their life."
