GARCONS et filles ('boys and girls' to you and I) at Gartocharn Primary celebrated the end of their ‘French Week’ with a fantastic French Market.

Primary 6/7 hosted the event with the help of top chef Florian, from the Finnieston Restaurant in Glasgow. The school were thrilled to have a French chef to help them organise the event, speak to pupils in French throughout the day and preparing traditional French food, such as ‘cuisses de grenouille’ and ‘escargot’ (frogs legs and snails).

Florian visited the school, specifically to help with the market on behalf of the Finnieston restaurant in Glasgow, where Head Chef David Hetherington had this to say: “It was our pleasure to support the school in this event, at the Finnieston and Kained Holdings, we are very much about the community and giving back.

"We pride ourselves on our commitment to serving only the very best seasonal and sustainable Scottish Seafood, complimented by local Scottish produce, but we are continuously inspired by cultures from around the world and the community around us.”

Pupils were invited to the market one class at a time to ‘spend’ the euros that they had been provided with. The P6/7’s, who ran the market, got some experience in organising an event, giving change, following price lists, serving customers, hosting and of course, manning the market stall, including their very own crepe station.

While the P6/7’s were busy working away, the P1s to P5s enjoyed being looked after and served by the older pupils. They enjoyed tasting a wide variety of French delicacies that they may not otherwise have the opportunity to try.

Mr Mcdonald, the head teacher of the school, said: “The market was magnifique! Very well organised. There were interesting things to taste and I really enjoyed trying the frogs legs and snails.”

The P1 teacher Mrs Curry added:“It was fantastic! The selection of food was incredible and was attractively set out. It was brilliant seeing the children eat and enjoy the food from another country. I loved the fact that we were using euros.”
