A WEDDING celebration in Dumbarton turned sour when one of the guests was assaulted.

The incident, at a house in Napier Crescent, saw the victim of the attack injured after he was repeatedly struck on the head and body.

The man's attacker, Andrew Young, 37, of Gray Street, Alexandria, was due to stand trial for the offence at Dumbarton Sheriff Court last week.

But before the trial could begin Young's solicitor Lauren Kerr told sheriff Simon Pender that her client was now pleading guilty to an amended charge.

Young had been present at a party on July 9 to celebrate a wedding which took place the previous day.

The court heard that the guests and newlyweds were in the living room drinking and at around ten o'clock in the evening the victim retired to bed with a headache.

Around one hour later he was awoken to the sound of an argument and found the guests in the hall where he asked them to leave.

But Young didn't take kindly to this and repeatedly struck his victim on the face and head.

The victim was in pain and tried to use his hands to protect his head. He attempted to defend himself and punched Young.

Young's girlfriend ushered him away from the property as the victim bled from cuts.

Prosecutor David McDonald said: "Around 11.40 police attended the house and found the accused in the close bleeding from his nose., he told them that he suffers from nose bleeds.

"Young was detained, taken to the station and processed.

"Paramedics attended the property and saw to the victim who had two small superficial injuries to his lips and a cut to his head. His wounds were cleaned and no further treatment was needed."

A reference on the original indictment to Young striking his victim on the head and body with a knife and roasting fork or similar instruments was deleted with the agreement of the Crown.

Sentence was deferred until April 20, in order to obtain a social work report; Young's bail was continued.
