MSP Jackie Baillie has welcomed new figures which show that the Vale of Leven Hospital has a lower mortality rate than the Royal Alexandra Hospital.

The combined mortality rate for the Vale and the RAH was higher than normal.

Official NHS statistics are not routinely published for each hospital but Ms Baillie asked the Scottish Government for an individual breakdown of the stats.

And the figures show that the death rate at the Vale of Leven Hospital was almost half that of the RAH in the latest quarter.

The Vale recorded a 1.8 per cent mortality rate in October – December 2016 compared to 3.3 per cent at the RAH.

Ms Baillie said: “I am pleased that NHS Scotland has agreed to publish these new figures which show that the Vale of Leven Hospital has a lower than average mortality rate. This is a positive indicator of the high quality of care provided at the Vale.”

A spokesperson for NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde said: “There is a continual drive to review the case mix and the reasons for the HSMR (Hospital Standardised Mortality Ratio) at the RAH and VOL.

“As a Board we continually monitor information, including mortality rates.”
