A WEEK celebrating the pleasure of reading has given secondary pupils in Dumbarton and Vale of Leven food for thought.

For the theme of Book Week Scotland, which ran until Sunday, was “nourish”, focusing on healthy food, mind and body.

Special lunchtime events were held at Vale of Leven Academy library on Tuesday and Dumbarton Academy library on Wednesday.

School librarian Fiona Matheson was successful in receiving funding from the Scottish Book Trust for Book Week Scotland promotions for both school libraries where she works.

Fiona said: “The book launches were to promote the recently purchased books for a self-help collection of books for teenagers with funding received.

“A healthy buffet was provided at the book launch by pupils from the home economics department.

“All staff in the school were invited and pupils as well.

“There were activities such as a library quiz, craft activities, a prize draw to win healthy eating books and book buffet event, like musical chairs.

“There is also to be a writing competition for pupils with prizes.”

Meanwhile, on Thursday, staff and pupils were invited to take part in a library lunch to promote reading and books.

The book launches and all events were very successful with high attendance form staff and pupils.

Book Week is for people of all ages and walks of life to come together in libraries, schools, community venues and workplaces to share and enjoy books and reading.

They were joined by Scottish authors, poets, playwrights, storytellers and illustrators to bring a packed programme of events and projects to life.
