AN ACCLAIMED author will explore the darker side of fairy tales at a special event in Dumbarton Library this week.

Short story writer Kirsty Logan will be holding a talk about the less familiar side of the magical stories we think we all know on Thursday, February 22.

The darker side may seem a surprising topic, as most people will associate these enduring stories with a happy ending meant for children.

But, while we’re more familiar with the tame storybook versions, fairy tales were originally shared between adults and were full of blood, violence, sex, mystery and betrayal.

Kirsty said: “I will be talking about fairy tales in a way people will have maybe not have heard before, when they heard them as kids or in Disney.

“Fairy tales were originally for adults but somewhere along the line they were toned down. Changing the story to make it suitable for children is a relatively new concept.”

The Darker Side of Fairy Tales with Kirsty Logan is at Dumbarton Library at 7pm on Thursday, February 22.

This event is free but ticketed. Places can be booked at eventbrite.co.uk.
