THE heavy snow did not put paid to the children and staff at St Patrick's Primary School in Dumbarton celebrating World Book Day.

Although it was postponed for a few days, with the school closed because of the weather, when it was re-scheduled all 360 children from the school rose to the challenge and were resplendent in their costumes, dressing up as one of their favourite storybook characters.

This year's theme was a celebration of authors, illustrators, books and, most importantly, a celebration of reading. The children had lots of fun dressing as their favourite characters and discussing their favourite books throughout what proved to be a highly successful event.

Depute head teacher Michelle Lang said: "Time was set aside to speak with the children about how we are going to get involved in First Minister Nicola Sturgeon's Reading challenge. The children are excited to take up the challenge of regenerating our reading environments and get involved in personalised reading challenges.

Primary 5 pupil Finn Bradley, who was dressed up as his favourite character from Diary of a Wimpy Kid, said : “ I enjoyed dressing up because my friends and I were all the same character, Greg Heffley.”

There was a huge range of themed costumes, including fairytale characters, super heroes to The Cat in the Top Hat and Where's Wally.

The school take part in World Book Day each year, and always pride themselves in coming up with a new theme year after year. They're already working on their theme for 2019.
