Renowned graffiti artist Barry Jenkins – aka Barry the Cat – has teamed up with Dumbarton-based charity Tullochan to give their new family centre a vibrant makeover.

The spray can master has been working with children on the Tullochan Futures programme, which helps young people experiencing complex issues, to create a mural for the charity’s new building.

Since work started on March 13, a sea of purple has taken hold of the centre at Broadmeadow Industrial Estate in Dumbarton.

And the graffitist, who has peppered West Dunbartonshire with several of his iconic designs, has taught some spray can skills to his keen young team as the mural has grown.

The Glasgow artist said: “We wanted to get the kids involved. I quite enjoy it myself.

“It was mostly designed by myself, and the kids have come up with a few positive words to put up on there are well like ‘life changing’ and things like that.”

The design incorporates Tullochan’s theme colour purple with imagery of youth and support in his own unique, urban art style.

Mr Jenkins said: “It’s been a good experience. Not everyone can pick up a spray can and go at it straight away so that’s been interesting for me, seeing how they deal with that.

“The children have been doing a lot of blocking in of colour, and a couple of them have done a few more bits.

“It’s not really for me, it’s for the kids. It’s an experience for them that they don’t get chance to have very often.”

And Chris Mathers, grants and communications manager at Tullochan, says the project reflects the ethos of the charity.

Mr Mathers said: “People didn’t really have any experience beforehand but they’ve all been helping to muck in.

“The young people seem to really enjoy it. It’s something new for them and it’s going down well.

“We’ve had quite a vocal response to it.

“We’ve given Barry free rein. I love this sort of stuff. I think it’s just very dynamic. It shows what we’re all about and showcases our work with young people – there’s a vibrancy about it.”
