A CENTRE which attracts tens of thousands of people from across Scotland each year could be axed.

Milton Visitor Centre, which is just off the A82 heading into Dumbarton, is under review by West Dunbartonshire Council (WDC) because of declining visitor numbers at the facility.

A report by the Elaine Melrose, executive director of Housing, Environmental and Economic Development (HEED), said over the last five years the centre has experienced a significant decrease in visitor numbers.

Discussions are now underway for a more cost-effective alternative to the Milton Visitor Information Centre.

WDC provides VisitScotland with annual funding of more than £47,000 as a contribution towards the delivery of tourism services in and for the benefit of the area.

Visitor numbers have plunged from a high of almost 24,000 in 2007/8 to less than 16,000 in 2009/10.

The figures, as of February this year, currently stand at 6589 sparking fears the centre is in a downward spiral.

The full report will be put to members of the HEED committee on Wednesday June 8 at 10am in the Education Centre, St Margaret of Scotland Hospice, East Barns Street, Clydebank.
