Green light for Academy
DUMBARTON will finally see it's new £15.5m academy built after it was granted planning permission today (Tuesday).
BAM Construction - which built the new Vale of Leven Academy - has been appointed to construct the new school.
It should be completed by summer 2013.
However, Planning Committee councillors voted against allowing the new floodlit sports pitches to be let out to the community.
It follows residents' outrage in Clydebank, who say the community lets at St Peter the Apostle Academy have led to excessive noise and anti-social behaviour.
WDC had to take decision last year to suspend lets at the Clydebank school, this decision was partially overturned in December.
The Dumbarton Academy pitches will only be available for school use until 6pm.
Brian Kirk, representing Dumbarton Academy Parent Council told the meeting that parents supported this restriction.
He said: "It is regrettable that community lets for the pitches has been removed, but we felt it was inappropriate to allow that and there are other suitable locations in Dumbarton.
"This has been a long and arduous [planning] application."
Any decision to alter restriction on lets must be brought before the Planning Committee.
Work will include demolishing the current school and the old Brock Bowling Club.
The new academy will be built using blue and grey brick, metal cladding, glass and an aluminium roof with 110 car parking spaces and a drop-off point for cars and buses.
There will be three floodlit sports pitches and a 100m running track.
