Previously, residents were able to purchase a Dumbarton-Glasgow weekly ticket costing either £15.50 or £16.50 which gave them unlimited journeys between the two places, seven-days a week.

But following a fares review earlier this month, First decided to cancel the ticket, instead replacing it with the FirstWeek Network ticket which allows unlimited travel across the Greater Glasgow and Clyde network.

From last Monday (April 7) bus users can now pay either £18.50 or £19.50 for a weekly network ticket.

While this increases the amount of travelling available, one Dumbarton man, who works as a software developer in Glasgow and used the ticket each week, says bus users have been forced into stumping up the extra cash.

The commuter, who did not want to be named, told the Reporter: “There’s no point in me paying for a ticket that takes me to these other places, all I want to do is go from Dumbarton to Glasgow.

“It was a Monday morning when I bought my weekly ticket from a driver and he told me about the changes, I couldn’t believe it.

“I spoke to some people on the bus about the changes and a few of them were completely unaware they were going to have to buy the other ticket.” A spokesman for First stressed the company had published details of the fare changes online on both its own website and social media, in the press and on posters on board its buses.

He said: “We announced last week details of our annual fares review. Despite rising costs and the ongoing challenging economy, I’m pleased we’ve been able to freeze many of our fares, including some of our most popular products. “Unfortunately, we’ve had to increase the cost of some tickets, however I can assure customers that we’ve done everything we can to keep these increases to the absolute minimum.

“Demand for the Dumbarton-Glasgow City ticket was very low and as a result we’ve withdrawn it from the range of products on offer. Customers can instead use our FirstWeek Network ticket which gives users the opportunity to enjoy unlimited travel across our network.

“Indeed users might also consider the First4Week or the First10Week tickets which offers travel from as little as £13 per week.”
