Rumours had been confirmed that the retailer had made inquiries about opening in Dumbarton, particularly in the town centre.

A spokesperson for the German retailer confirmed the interest but added that the firm was still seeking a site.

The firm, which last month announced a huge 65 percent increase in UK profits, vowed to maintain the supermarket price war that has drawn legions of cost-conscious shoppers to its aisles after posting the big rise in profits.

There are currently two Aldi stores in West Dunbartonshire — Alexandria and Clydebank.
