Daniel Keiller, 23, of Northfield Road in Old Bonhill, was spotted behind the wheel of a Ford car which drove into a car park in Redburn just after midnight on November 30.

Keiller appeared from custody at Dumbarton Sheriff Court last week where he pleaded guilty to driving the vehicle while over the drink drive limit and having no insurance in place.

Outlining the circumstances of the incident, fiscal depute Jeanette MacLean told the court: “It was five past midnight and the police witnesses were on patrol in an unmarked police vehicle.

“They turned right and saw a black Ford Focus driving towards them with two persons on-board. They saw the accused driving the vehicle. It turned into a car park area.” The fiscal went on to say that when the police officers approached the car and spoke to Keiller they asked him if he had been drinking, to which he replied, “I had a couple of bottles of Bud [Budweiser] a couple of hours ago.” When breath tested, the sample Keiller provided gave a reading of 78mg of alcohol in 100ml of breath — the legal limit is 35mg.

Keiller’s defence solicitor, Heather Reid, told the court that the car did not belong to her client but to a friend of his and he drove it only a very short distance.

She revealed: “His friend had arrived driving his vehicle and he asked for a shot.

“Police saw him manoeuvre from the street into the car park and that was as far as they moved.” In relation to the drink-driving charge, Sheriff Brian Cameron disqualified Keiller from holding or obtaining a driving licence for a period of 12 months and fined him £300.

He was admonished on the second charge of driving without insurance.
