The council joined local authorities across the UK in raising the Commonwealth flag last week to mark the second-ever Commonwealth Day.

West Dunbartonshire Council was one of 730 local authorities, community groups, and charities throughout the UK taking part in the ceremony that recognised the Commonwealth family of nations that encompasses the globe.

Provost Douglas McAllister hosted the event at the local authority’s offices at Garshake, which included a special message of good wishes from Her Majesty The Queen to all those taking part — read by Gill Aitkenhead, Vice Lord Lieutenant of Dunbartonshire.

Also attending were representatives of Police Scotland, Joyce White, the council’s chief executive, and elected members.

Provost McAllister delivered a personal message from His Excellency Kamalesh Sharma, Secretary-General of the Commonwealth, before all guests read out a specially written Commonwealth Affirmation.

Provost McAllister said: “The Commonwealth Day ceremony was a chance for communities across the UK to celebrate the Commonwealth and the values it stands for.” The flag will fly over West Dunbartonshire until April 9.

The Boys Brigade won big at a swimming gala last week.

The Company Section swimming team won the Lennox and Argyll Battalion Swimming Gala event and retained their trophy for a second year on Friday evening in the Clydebank Sport Dome. Team members are Thomas, Bruce, Joshua, Euan, Calum, Craig, and Will.
