Police have reminded the community in Dumbarton and the Vale to be vigilant of cold callers after a Clydebank pensioner was contacted by a suspected scammer over the phone.

The woman received a phone call informing her that that she was entitled to a cash refund of £3,400 – but she was told she had to purchase £340 worth of UKASH vouchers to cover a 10 per cent ‘handling fee’.

The victim suspected the call was a scam and did not provide any details.

Inspector Neil Smith told the Reporter: “The public should always be wary of unsolicited telephone calls and online enquiries. Although some of these calls are genuine enquiries, they can often cause anxiety or annoyance.

“Never pass any personal information or bank details to cold callers and, if you have any concerns regarding the authenticity, politely terminate the call.” For advice on how to prevent companies from calling visit www.tpsonline.org.uk.
