The Merchant Navy's official flag was hoisted in Dumbarton today to recognise the dedication and service of the seafarers who supplied Britain during both World Wars.
West Dunbartonshire Council marked Merchant Navy Day, a national day of action to raise awareness of the importance of historical and present-day seafarers.
Provost Douglas McAllister hoisted the flag at the council’s Garshake Road offices, marking the first time the local authority has raised the Red Ensign.
He said: “Our region has long-standing historical links with the shipping industry, which has played such an important part in the economic development of West Dunbartonshire and beyond.
“I am delighted West Dunbartonshire has supported Merchant Navy Day by raising the Red Ensign for the first time.”
