A man who assaulted a woman after an incident in a Dumbarton pub has been fined £500.

Andrew Spence, 24, appeared at Dumbarton Sheriff Court for sentencing on Tuesday after previously pleading guilty to the offence.

Fiscal depute Claire Martin told the court Spence and his friends were thrown out of the Counting House pub in the town at about 9.30pm after being involved in an altercation with another group.

Shortly after this, a man and a woman linked to the latter group spotted Spence in the High Street.

He ran towards the man and the woman stepped in between them.

Ms Martin said: “The accused pushed [the victim] twice causing her to fall to the ground. Other members of the public stepped in and the police were called.” The assault took place on May 9 and Spence, of Napier Crescent, Brucehill, was arrested.

Spence’s lawyer, Scott Adair, told the court Spence’s recollection of the events had been affected by how much alcohol he had drank.

He said: “There appears to have been an altercation in the pub initially not involving him; he and his friends were then put out and the altercation continued verbally and he became involved.” Mr Adair added: “In the sober light of day he regrets this and apologises to [his victim] for his behaviour.”
