THE driver of the bin lorry which crashed in Glasgow killing six people – including three members of a Dumbarton family – has reportedly been arrested over claims he drove his car last month despite being banned from the road.

Harry Clarke, 58, is accused of getting behind the wheel of a car after losing both his car and HGV licences.

Three months ago a fatal accident inquiry (FAI) into last December’s tragedy heard claims he collapsed and lost control of his bin lorry after lying about previous blackouts at the wheel.

The FAI was also told Mr Clarke’s driving licences had been withdrawn after the December 2014 accident — in which Erin McQuade, 18, and her grandparents Jack Sweeney, 68, and Lorraine, 69, were among the six people who died — because of information they had since received about his medical history.

The Evening Times and Sun on Sunday reported Clarke was arrested after he was spotted behind the wheel two weeks ago — despite his car licence being withdrawn for 12 months him being banned him from HGVs for 10 years.

It is understood the police were alerted by a member of the public who allegedly spotted Mr Clarke, from Baillieston, Glasgow, behind the wheel of a car on Sunday, September 20.

Mr Clarke blacked out last December while driving a bin lorry which crashed into Christmas shoppers in George Square in the centre of Glasgow.

Six pedestrians died and a further 15 were injured.
