BONHILL Primary School had great success hosting their very first German themed lunch for pupils and parents.

The pupils have been studying German culture over the past few months and prepared a number of dishes to help further develop their knowledge of it.

The lunch was organised to help the school’s 1+2 language programme, the Scottish government’s language policy to have second languages introduced to children in primary school.

Primary four teacher and 1+2 coordinator, Claire-Louise Spence, told The Reporter: "It was a fabulous day, we’ve been doing special persons lunches for a while now and this was our busiest. I think we had over 90 people, we even had to put out extra tables."

"It was definitely as success, we had to add on at least an extra four tables but now I can't wait for the French one in February!"

The 1+2 programme is generally only implemented for primaries five to seven but Bonhill have started children on it as early as primary four. They have a teacher who delivers a weekly class to every pupil in those years, something Miss Spence believes has a great impact on the pupils.

Parents were the main guests at the lunch, attending in order to see the progress their children are making with their studies in German.

Miss Spence added: “We built a German menu and invited parents along to enjoy the lunch and see how the kids are doing. The parents seemed to be very pleased, the feedback we got was very positive.

"We had the 1+2 ambassadors who did the meeting and greeting along and they also helped people to use German phrases when they were ordering.

“It wasn't just for parents, and certain years though, it was for the whole school so it was quite valuable, there were even kids coming up from the infant years got to take part."

The school will continue their special lunches throughout next year starting with a French themed event, as that is the second part of their 1+2 programme.
