Politicians, civil servants, union members and residents all paused for a minute silence last night to honour the lives lost in three tragedies.

The full West Dunbartonshire Council fell silent as a mark of respect for the loss of three crew members of the Flying Phantom tug boat, which sank on the River Clyde on December 19, 2007, and for the loss of three family members from Dumbarton in the Glasgow bin lorry accident on December 22, 2014.

Councillor Denis Agnew asked just before the room stood to pay tribute to also acknowledge the loss of 12 lives in the terrorist attack in Berlin earlier this week.

Provost Douglas McAllister led the moment of silence and made a point to thank Cllr Agnew for his annual noting of the lives taken in the Flying Phantom tragedy.

The tug claimed Captain Stephen Humphreys, engineer Robert Cameron and deckhand Eric Blackley.

Jack Sweeney, 68, his wife, Lorraine, 69, and their granddaughter, Erin McQuade, 18, from Dumbarton, were all killed the bin lorry crash two years ago today.
