TWO men have been jailed for stealing a car from an Alexandria Street.

Francis McGachy and John Ingles, of Colquhoun Drive, appeared at Dumbarton Sheriff Court on Friday, September 22 for sentencing.

The pair pleaded guilty at an earlier hearing to stealing car keys and medication from SIS and Co Hairdressers, before stealing a car from a nearby street shortly after 4.30pm on August 30 this year.

Fiscal depute Scott Simpson told the court that: “The owner of the vehicle was in the hairdressers and observed the accused and another male within the hairdressers acting suspiciously. She asked them to leave and thought that was the end of the matter. She went out to her car later and it was gone.”

A witness was driving on Main Street and observed the car being driven erratically on Heather Avenue.

A woman was driving her car and was struck by the car driven by McGachy. She stopped the car in an attempt to speak to the driver but he drove past narrowly missing her. They struck the drivers door taking it off its hinges before driving off.

Police investigated and found both accused at Ingles’ last known address.

McGachy, 39, also admitted dangerous driving, failing to give his details and driving without a licence on the same date.

McGachy’s solicitor Lauren Kerr, said that her client’s recollection of events was not clear and that he was “very remorseful”.

Ingles, 46, was also sentenced on three counts of stealing cosmetics, worth more than £1,000 from Boots in Dumbarton’s High Street.

Ingles’ solicitor, Judith Reid, said her client’s offending was carried out to support a “considerable heroin addiction” and suggested he be considered for a drug treatment and testing order.

McGachy was jailed for 12 months and disqualified from driving for the same length of time. He was also told he would have to pass an extended driving test.

Ingles was sentenced to nine months in jail.
