Peter Heath, deputy assistant chief officer, for the West of Scotland, writes:

For many, Christmas is a time for celebration, with family and friends coming together to enjoy the festivities. While it is a time of fun, we should always keep safety in our minds.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) would like to ask the public to take extra care over the festive season to ensure that their families and loved ones stay safe.

Accidental fires over the winter months can be caused by an increased use of heating and electrical appliances plus higher alcohol consumption during the holiday season.

The winter months also bring unexpected and dangerous conditions to our roads. It’s important that motorists take the necessary precautions when driving in bad weather.

We would also urge people to look out for anyone who they feel may be vulnerable such as an elderly neighbour, friend or relative.

If you think they may benefit from a free home fire safety visit please get in touch with us via our website or call 0800 0731 999.

Meanwhile, as the New Year approaches, 2018 will witness the latest step towards the transformation of SFRS to better meet the needs of Scotland’s communities.

While fires are reducing, new risks are emerging, including terrorism, emergency medical response and severe weather.

We wish you a happy and safe Christmas and New Year from everyone at SFRS.
