Councillor Ian Dickson, writes:

As the New Year approaches, it brings a new hope for many.

Our commitments renewed, let the force awaken within us to make the positive changes we need, and may the force be with us always to sustain those changes.

West Dunbartonshire shares in Scotland’s can-do attitude, recently accelerating our part of the increase in early years care with 100 new jobs announced, and with new parents receiving free baby boxes are ensuring the best possible start in life.

The council are also about to consult on next year’s budget, and are open to your ideas on different ways to deliver or improve services within the limited means at our disposal.

It’s challenging, and there is a large shortfall to make up but I’m also very clear that our role can’t be to simply manage decline as has been done in the past.

Every time I hear an officer tell me something is “innovative” or “courageous” I’m reminded of the Yes Minister TV series and I’m that bit more determined.

We MUST focus on a better future, and be defined not by what we can’t do but what we CAN do.

For now though enjoy the New Year’s festivities, and I look forward to meeting the new you in 2018.

Oh, and if I can leave one piece of advice for those out partying, it’s to be careful who you stand next to at midnight.
