MORE than 200 people gathered in glorious sunshine to support a charity football match dedicated to a baby boy who sadly passed away aged just six days.
Renton couple Andy and Sharon Russell's son Lucas died in September last year after he was born with a fatal chromosone disorder called Edward's Syndrome or Trisomy 18.
But they are now delighted with the incredible contribution from friends, family and the general public who attended the Lucas 11 vs Vale Juniors charity match in Alexandria on Sunday.
The Lucas 11, a team comprising of friends and family of the Renton couple, were narrowly defeated 3-2 by a team of ex Vale of Leven Junior players.
The match was officiated by former SPL referee and Dumbarton lawyer Kenny Clark.
Andy said he was delighted with the contribution of both sets of players, adding that the defeat was a side note in an inspirational day dedicated to educating people about Trisomy 18 and raising funds for two causes close to their hearts.
Around £3,500 was raised on Sunday at Millburn Park which will go towards a family bereavement room in Glasgow's Southern General Hospital and Trisomy 18 charities.
A thankful Andy, 33, who made an appearance in the match, spoke to the Reporter about the successful day.
He said: "It was absolutely fantastic, the weather was great and the atmosphere was brilliant.
"I'm sure there will be a few sore legs this week.
"We think we have raised around £3,500 which is absolutely phenomenal - it is beyond our expectations.
"We are hoping to make this an annual event, the players are all up for it and I can't thank them enough."
