A GROUP of Alexandria residents protesting against a controversial housing development has lost its battle after plans were approved on appeal.
Government reporter Mr Hutchison, from the Directorate of Planning and Environmental Appeals (DPEA), has ruled that due to the "urgent" need for social housing in the area, and what he felt was a suitable development plan, he could not object to the development.
Dunbritton Housing Association (DHA) plans to build a mixture of 30 flats and houses on the site next to Leven Street.
Mr Hutchison visited Leven Street in March to oversee the appeal made by developer DHA.
DHA had appealed against a decision by West Dunbartonshire Council's Planning Committee to reject its plans.
The proposal had come up against stiff opposition in the community after claims the plans represented over-development.
It led to the formation of the Leven Street Action Group.
Around 30 protesters gathered at Mr Hutchinson's site inspection last month bearing banners.
Mr Hutchison added that he had "reflected at length over the strength of local public opinion" against the development.
