AN animal rescue team is appealing for information after a pair of elderly West Highland Terriers were found abandoned near to a recently vacated travellers’ camp.

The male and female dogs - estimated to be around 11 or 12-years-old - were found in a bad condition next to the River Leven by the SSPCA.

The location, just off Havoc Road, in Westcliff, is close to where a group of travellers had recently been staying illegally.

The Westies were originally spotted by a member of the public, who alerted the SSPCA to their plight.

An ambulance driver from the animal welfare charity rushed to the waterside to rescue the dogs, who were both badly matted and suffering from infection.

They were taken to the SSPCA Dunbartonshire and West Scotland Animal Rescue and Re-homing Centre in Milton, where staff - who have named the pair Queenie and Captain - say they have been getting a lot of care and attention.

Joe McDade, the Milton centre manager, added: “Queenie is quite unwell, suffering from ear and eye infections and our vets are concerned about her back legs, which she seems to be having some problems with.

“Captain is also suffering from an eye infection but overall he’s in fairly good health."

The animal welfare centre does not know at this stage how the dogs got to become stranded by the River Leven, as they were found at the bottom of a steep embankment.

Anyone with information relating to the dogs should contact the SSPCA animal helpline on 03000 999 999.
