THE new £15.5m Dumbarton Academy faces its final two hurdles next week.

Councillors are being asked to approve a contractor and grant planning permission for the project.

BAM Construction - which built the new Vale of Leven Academy - has been proposed as the most appropriate tender.

Work will include demolishing the current school and the Brock Bowling Club, which has been relocated to the playing fields on Townend Road.

The Tendering Committee will debate the contract when it meets next Tuesday (February 7).

On the same day, the Planning Committee will also be asked to formally rubber-stamp the planning application for the build.

The new academy will be built using blue and grey brick, metal cladding, glass and an aluminium roof with 110 car parking spaces and a drop-off point for cars and buses.

There will also be three floodlit sports pitches and a 100m running track.

It is anticipated that the new school will be ready by summer 2013.

The Tendering Committee will meet at 9.30am in the Municipal Building, Station Road, Dumbarton, with the Planning Committee starting immediately afterwards at 10am.
