AS the world prepares to celebrate International Nurse Day today (Saturday), residents are being offered the chance to nominate their own nursing hero.

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (GGC) has launched its search for NHS heroes as part of its prestigious annual Chairman's Awards for staff who go that extra mile and provide exceptional care for their patients.

Amongst the eight award categories is a special nursing award and members of the public can put forward their nursing stars - an individual or a team - who have demonstrated the highest standards of care for their patients.

Rosslyn Crocket, GGC board nurse director, said: "The Nursing category awards were such a huge success last year that they will remain a highlight of the nursing calendar in 2012.

"Last year's winners were fabulous examples of practical nursing and patient care of the highest standard. They encapsulated the standards of what we must all aspire to.

"I am really looking forward to helping our Chairman and the rest of his panel go through the entries for this year's award and to attending the presentation ceremony which will take place this year on November 26th."

This year's awards will also recognise the contribution that the public make to our organisation with two new categories - a Volunteer Award and a Patient Ambassador Award.

The Volunteer Award gives our staff and the public an opportunity to nominate someone who goes that extra mile to volunteer help to our patients whilst the Patient Ambassador Award recognises the efforts of those who represents patients either on a Public Partnership Forum or on a patients' panel.

Andrew Robertson, GGC chairman, said: "This is the fourth year of these awards and I am delighted and impressed with the enthusiasm shown by patients and their relatives and healthcare professionals in identifying worthy nominees.

"The awards were of an exceptionally high standard last year and the competition was stiff.  I have no doubt that we'll receive the same high standard of entries this year and I look forward once again to the difficult job of choosing the winners."
