Colin Gibbs caused the accident on Dumbarton’s Cardross Road by driving without due care and attention after he jumped behind the wheel on October 25.
Prior to the collision the 44-year-old former Navy man had been drowning sorrows because he had been unable to find a job.
Last week he appeared in the dock at Dumbarton Sheriff Court to hear his fate after previously admitting his guilt.
Scott Simpson, fiscal depute, said at about 4.30pm Gibbs’ vehicle ran into the back of a stationary vehicle, which caused another collision. Police officers, who happened to be passing by at the time, were flagged down.
He was then given a roadside breath test which he failed and was arrested.
Last week, Gibbs was made subject of a Community Payback Order which requires him to carry out 225 hours of unpaid work in the community and disqualified from driving for three years and fined £300.
