The 20-year-old from Alexandria faced hotly tipped favourite Michael Jamieson as well as the strongly fancied English duo Andrew Willis and Adam Peaty in the 200m breaststroke final but it was the boy from Alexandria who had the crowd on their feet with an incredible final 100m to secure gold.
After the first two lengths it became clear it was going to be a shoot out between Murdoch and Jamieson for the silver and gold medals with the duo showing they were too good for the rest of the field.
And over the final two lengths Murdoch proved too strong for Jamieson as he raced ahead of the 25-year-old Glaswegian and finish in a new Games record time of 2:07:30.
