Speaking shortly after an incredible Glasgow 2014 200m breaststroke final, in which he produced a quite stunning swim to take gold, Murdoch said: "It was always a dream of mine to come out to the home crowd and perform my best but I just can't explain how it feels over the last 50m having that many people cheer you on - it is something I will remember for the rest of my life.

"All my family, my girlfriend and my friends were in the crowd tonight - it meant the world to me and I still just can't believe it has happened."

The 20-year old from Alexandria forced Michael Jamieson into second place but he says he still looks up to the 25-year-old Glaswegian, Murdoch continued: "Michael is still an idol in my eye.

"It is hard when you are up against someone as prestigious as him - he has been there and knows what it is like to perform at that level and, in reality, I actually haven't been there so to stand up against the more experienced man tonight was a bit nerve wracking for me but it was all about holding my nerve tonight and I did."

And while Murdoch was delighted, a very dignified Jamieson said: "It's not about me tonight, it's about Ross.

"He deserves it because he was by far the best swimmer out there."

Murdoch returns to the pool tomorrow morning for the 100m breaststroke and based on that performance tonight there could well be more medals heading back to Alexandria.
