Murdoch had already won gold in the 200m breaststroke and bronze in the 100m breaststroke before taking to the pool this evening.

After another brilliant performance from the 20-year-old got Scotland back into the race, however it wasn't enough for a medal as England took gold, Australia silver and South Africa the bronze.

The 'proud Vale boy', as he described himself over the weekend, may not have won a medal tonight but there is no doubt he has had a Games to remember.

Shortly after tonight's race Ross spoke to the Reporter and told us: "For me it's not really sunk in yet - I think I am going to take a few days off to digest what has happened and just to chill.

"I have had a lot of messages of support on Facebook, Twitter, email - the support has been overwhelming.

"I just want to thank everybody that has been there because the crowd have supported me so much along the way.

"My story has travelled so far around Scotland and I just want to thank people for that.

"There is no way I could have expected this - before the Games I felt I had a good swim at the Scottish Nationals in the 200m and I thought if I paced it slightly differently then I could be able to swim it a lot faster but in the honest truth I didn't know how much faster but at the end of the day it was quite considerable."

From everyone at the Reporter and on behalf of everyone throughout Dumbarton and the Vale we just want to say - WELL DONE ROSS, YOU HAVE DONE US ALL PROUD.
