Hundreds turn out to hail captain

HUNDREDS of grieving Sons fans turned out to pay their respects to club captain Gordon Lennon today (Tuesday) in an emotional farewell.

A lone piper marched in front of the hearse containing the young dad"s coffin when it arrived at the Strathclyde Homes Stadium, provoking tearful scenes.

Club chairman Gilbert Lawrie and manager Jim Chapman placed a floral Dumbarton FC crest in the hearse.

And Gordon Lennon"s dad could be seen wearing a DFC strip and a captain"s armband in tribute to his son.

After the hearse did a lap of the ground the fans, young and old, lined the exit to applaud their hero, as Gordon"s heartbroken family watched on.

For some it was all to much and there were open displays of grief.

Lifelong Sons supporter Alan Glass had travelled all the way from his Falkirk home to say goodbye to the 26-year-old known as Guido.

He told the Reporter: 'Gordon Lennon always had time for the fans.

'He had warmth and humility, with no airs and graces or any sense of being someone important and we will all miss him.'

Mary Ferguson, 68, added: 'He was a genuine person and loved his football and the supporters.

'He would be happy to see so many people down here today.

'He had such a big smile and will be sadly missed.'

In a poignant twist of events the piper who led the hearse away from the stadium was the same one who had triumphantly welcomed the team back to the ground just a few short months ago when Guido had guided his troops to the league title.

Gordon"s funeral service will be held at 11am at Hillington Park Church, in Cardonald, tomorrow (Wednesday).
