Amy proves experts wrong as she gains third exam pass
AN inspirational student who was told she might never cope in main stream education has just landed her third language Higher qualification.
Former Dumbarton Academy pupil Amy McGrandles, 24, was born blind and suffers from Aspergers Syndrome - a condition which causes significant social interaction difficulties.
But she has battled against all the odds and now has Highers in Spanish, French and German.
Her delighted mum Hazel said: "I'm so proud that she has three Highers and all in languages - who said Amy can't communicate."
Hazel now hopes that Amy will go on to work after her "sheer determination" allowed her triumph against adversity.
Amy has landed the Highers over the past three years whilst at Cardonald College, in Glasgow, and she is now hoping to complete the set by studying Higher English this year.
Amy went to St Vincent's school for the blind from the age of five, before going on to Dumbarton Academy where she got an A for Higher music.
Kate Sangster, head of student support at Cardonald College, has praised the commitment that Amy has shown to her studies over the years.
