Area's top cop says he is winning crime battle

DESPITE West Dunbartonshire being one of the worst regions for incidents of violent crime in Scotland, the area's top cop has defended the latest figures.

Statistics released last week showed that across Dumbarton, Alexandria and Clydebank in 2008-09 there were 160 serious assaults and 319 offensive weapon crimes.

The number of serious assaults is the fourth highest in Scotland, while weapon arrests is second top.

Although concerns have been raised about the figures, Chief Superintendent John Thomson, the area's divisional commander, believes huge strides are being made.

He told the Reporter: "I look forward to building on the progress made over the last two years, in particular, and continuing to use all the resources at my disposal to address violence and the causes of violence within West Dunbartonshire."
