Dumbarton lad plays young socialist in theatre role

A FIREBRAND perma-tanned socialist's life was in the spotlight again, but this time it was not cast by the glare of the media.

Young Dumbarton actor Evan McGalpine took on the role of a young Tommy Sheridan in what could prove to be the 12-year-old's big break.

The first year pupil at Our Lady and Saint Patrick's High took on the part during a recent run of the play, Oor Hoose, at the Pavilion Theatre in Glasgow.

The Silverton boy was one of two pupils from Nicola Park's Musical and Theatre Academy, based in Dumbarton, to take part in the play.

Seven-year-old Molly Cowie, from Bellsmyre, played a youngster called Shirley in the production, which detailed a day in the life of a typical Glasgow tenement.

Nicola, who also starred in the play as Minnie McGhee, told the Reporter: "It is great to see the kids working hard on their skills, and then pulling it off in front of a sold-out audience for two weeks in a row.

"They did brilliantly, and I think many people really took a shine to them, so I completely believe we will be seeing plenty more of Molly and Evan on the stage."

Nicola's academy classes take place between 12.15pm and 4pm every Saturday in the United Reformed Church, in Leven Street, Dumbarton, next to Knoxland Primary.
