Town centre march would be 2nd in 3 months
A DUMBARTON flute band has applied to hold an Orange walk through the town - just two months after a similar parade provoked massive controversy.
The Pride of the Rock Flute Band, which took part in the Provincial Grand Black Chapter march, has applied to hold the walk to mark its 21st anniversary.
If given the go-ahead, the parade will be held at 10am on Saturday October 24, which is outside the traditional marching season of April to August.
The proposed route will start at the foot of Dumbarton Castle, next to the Strathclyde Homes Stadium, and travel up through the centre of the town, along Glasgow Road and the High Street, before finishing at Dumbarton Orange Hall in Broadmeadow Industrial Estate an hour later.
However, police previously raised concerns about safety, stating that Pride of the Rock members "antagonised" members of a Celtic supporters' club in Dumbarton during a march in 2005 - a claim vehemently denied by the band's organisers.
The Pride of the Rock has invited 14 other bands to take part, although at the time of the Reporter going to press, it was unclear how many of these were going to take part.
A decision on the march will be taken by West Dunbartonshire Council's Licensing Committee on next Tuesday (October 13).
