Inspirational baby defied doctors' odds

LOVING parents - whose son died aged just six days - are determined he will be remembered as an "inspirational little fighter".

Tiny Lucas Russell was born with a fatal chromosome disorder and despite his short life, he repeatedly defied all the odds and "amazed" doctors with his phenomenal spirit.

Medics had advised Sharon and Andy to terminate the pregnancy when Lucas was diagnosed with Trisomy 18, or Edwards Syndrome, which is an incurable disorder that leads to 95 per cent of babies dying in the womb.

And although the whole experience has been described as a living "nightmare" by his brave Vale parents, they say it is one they would not have changed.

Such is the impact that Lucas had on the Renton couple's life, they are now donating £1,000, which was raised at his funeral, to create a family room in his memory at the new Special Care Unit in the Southern General Hospital.

Dad Andy, 33, said: "For someone so small and young he is the most inspirational person I have ever met in my life."
