A MAN is fighting for his life after being beaten by a mob outside the Masonic Hall in Dumbarton.

Derek Castles, 38, is in an extremely serious condition in hospital following the vicious attack on Saturday night.

The incident occurred in Church Street, around 9.15pm and involved at least four men.

It is understood that prior to the attack, someone allegedly threw lit fireworks into the main hall of the facility provoking the trouble.

Mr Castles is not thought to have been drinking inside the Masonic Hall prior to the attack, which is being treated as attempted murder by police.

The assault comes amidst heightened tensions in the town which have been linked to the build up to the Orange walk earlier in the day - an event which had passed without incident despite fears of disorder.

Anyone who can help police with their enquiries is asked to contact CID officers at Dumbarton Police Office on telephone number 01389 822000.

Alternatively, information can be passed to CRIMESTOPPERS on 0800 555 111, where anonymity can be maintained.
