FIREBUGS torched Dumbarton Academy on Sunday night.

The suspected arson attack - in which two classrooms were damaged - has been condemned by council chiefs.

Fire crews rushed to the Crosslet Road school at around 5pm to deal with the blaze and found evidence of a break-in.

The damage caused to the maths classroom, where it is thought the fire started, is said to be "severe".

A council spokeswoman said: "Strathclyde Fire and Rescue was called to Dumbarton Academy late on Sunday afternoon where it discovered a fire in a first floor maths classroom.

"The room in question suffered severe damage as did the classroom immediately below it.

"The police are investigating the incident - it is believed the fire was started deliberately.

"This was a very serious act of fire-raising which could have led to even more significant and widespread damage to the building and could also have endangered life and limb.

"Any member of the public with information which could lead to the identification of the perpetrators should contact the police as soon as possible."

Anyone with information can contact Dumbarton police office on 01389 822000 or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111, where anonymity can be maintained.
