CONTROVERSIAL plans to shut a primary school have moved a step closer.
After a public meeting was held last month, there was unanimous opposition to the move to close St Martin's Primary in Renton.
Despite this a report has now been submitted to councillors urging them to start closure consultations "immediately" with a view to shutting the school by June 2010.
If the proposals are agreed at the full West Dunbartonshire Council (WDC) meeting on Wednesday December 16, it would see the 45 pupils transferred to St Mary's, in Alexandria.
And as part of the move Renton and Vale of Leven Early Education and Childcare centres would merge and set-up in the current St Martin's building.
The public meeting on November 10 was attended by around 25 people - including angry parents, staff and councillors - when questionnaires showed the strong feeling against the closure.
One of the main issues which came to light was the need for retaining the school in a "socially disadvantaged" community and that the school was "vital".
