THE dawn of a new decade could see the construction of around 100 new homes on the site of a former convent and school which has lain derelict for 15 years.

The convent of Notre Dame in Brucehill, Dumbarton, was opened 100 years ago and became the second home in Scotland for the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur before they moved to Craigend House in 1994.

The surrounding five hectare site, which is now overgrown and derelict, was also the former home of St Michael's Primary school.

The school and convent, which were both listed buildings, had to be demolished after malicious fire raising and the former chapel building is all that remains.

In recent years the site has become a drinking den for teenagers.

After years of failed planning proposals, a new plan to build 90 homes, including the conversion of the chapel into flats, will be examined.

Councillors will decide whether to push through the plans at a Planning Committee meeting on January 12.
