A SHOCKED witness described how he thought to himself "that bus is never going to get under that bridge" seconds before a double-decker had its roof ripped off.
The bus collided with a low railway bridge near the Church Street roundabout on Friday morning.
Fortunately, nobody was injured in the accident as the top floor was empty as the bus was not in service.
However, motorists and other onlookers were left stunned after the incident near Dumbarton Central station.
One witness, Stephen Burton, who was quickly on the scene, said he noticed a sign on the back of the double decker indicating it might be a school bus and said his first concern was that there might have been young casualties.
And another eye witness told how he quickly dialled 999 after watching the shocking incident unfold before him. However, the driver was the only person in the vehicle and, although shaken, was uninjured in the incident which occurred around 9.30am.
Shocked Stephen, 32, from Dumbarton, said: "I saw the double-decker driving towards the bridge and I thought 'that's never going under', but the next thing - it was under the bridge."
A spokesperson for McColl's buses said: "The bus was not in service at the time - there was no-one on the bus apart from the driver - the driver was uninjured."
The 20-year-old woman driver has been charged with careless and inconsiderate driving in relation to the incident.
